The College of Nursing at Seton Hall University offers an online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Post-Master’s Certificate programs with three specializations: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP), and Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PNP-PC). Coursework is delivered 100% online with an online orientation and two required campus intensives during the middle and end of the program. Note that the orientation may be completed online instead of on-campus. Students also complete practicums at approved facilities local to the student.
In addition, an online MSN and RN to MSN Bridge program are available with a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) specialization. There may also be Post-Master’s Certificate and BSN to DNP programs available in the PMHNP specialization. Interested students should inquire with the Seton Hall College of Nursing. The PMHNP specialization is 100% online with no campus visits required. Students also complete 600 clinical hours locally.
Throughout the MSN, BSN to DNP, and post-master’s certificate programs, students learn how to advocate for their patients, develop collaborative relationships with patients, families, and care teams, and carry out ethical, clinical decision-making through critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The College of Nursing focuses on preparing competent, compassionate nurse practitioners to serve in their communities. Faculty provide mentoring and career support, giving students one-on-one attention. In addition, Seton Hall is a Catholic university, interweaving values of service, lifelong learning, and leadership into their curriculum.
Adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioners (AGACNPs) work with complex health issues of acutely ill adult patients. Typical settings may include surgical units, intensive care units, and critical care settings in hospitals. They develop assessment and management plans, work with health care teams, patients, and their families, and incorporate pathophysiologic, cultural, and pharmacotherapeutic principles into patient care. Graduates of this track are eligible to take the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care certification exams through American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB), as well as the certification exam through the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
Adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioners (AGPCNPs) work with adults and aging adults in primary care settings as well as long-term care settings. They create, assess, and manage health care treatment plans to create a better quality of life. Bringing cultural, pharmacotherapeutic, and pathophysiologic principles into their care plans, AGPCNPs utilize critical thinking skills and ethical decision-making in treating patients. Graduates of this specialization are eligible to take the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care certification exams through ANCC and AANPCB.
Pediatric primary care nurse practitioners (PNP-PCs) serve patients from birth to age 21, focusing on health promotion, disease prevention, and caring for patients with acute and chronic conditions. Graduates of this track are eligible to take the national certification in Primary Care through either the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).
Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) treat patients across the lifespan and are able to assess, diagnose, and treat families, groups, and individuals in regards to psychiatric disorders. Focus is placed on relationship building which can improve treatment and lead to better communication with client groups. Faculty all have a DNP or PhD and are fully qualified to train upcoming PMHNPs who will be eligible upon graduation to take the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification exam through the ANCC.
Nurse practitioners may work in specialty areas such as oncology, occupational health, neurology, pulmonary, cardiology, rheumatology, and GI. Positions may be found in hospitals, primary care clinics, hospices, government institutions, long-term health facilities, research organizations, urgent care facilities, home health care settings, and treatment centers.
Seton Hall University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA). The nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Seton Hall University is located in South Orange, New Jersey.
What to Expect from the Seton Hall University Online NP Programs
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the MSN and BSN to DNP programs through Seton Hall University must hold a BSN from an ACEN, CCNE, or NLNAC accredited program with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and a “B” average in all prior nursing coursework. RN to MSN Bridge applicants must have an RN license and a non-nursing bachelor’s degree with the minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Post-Master’s certificate students must hold an MSN degree with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Note that acute care students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. In addition, all applicants must show proof of an unencumbered RN license. Application materials include the application, an application fee, official transcripts, proof of liability insurance, two letters of reference, and a statement of professional goals. Some students will be asked to participate in a personal interview. Students whose primary language is not English must also provide proof of English language proficiency and WES reports if educated outside the United States.
Prior to enrolling, students must meet OSHA requirements for immunizations, criminal background check, medical history, liability insurance, and CPR. In addition, NP students must have at least one year of nursing experience, or two years if pursuing the AGACNP track, before beginning practicums.
Prerequisites include statistics, undergraduate physical assessment, and nursing research. NP students must complete a basic physical assessment refresher course within 3 years prior to the first practicum.
State Restrictions: While Seton Hall University accepts students from most states, applicants outside of New Jersey should check with the College of Nursing to make sure they are eligible for the nursing programs. Students from the following states may not enroll in the adult-gerontology nurse practitioner programs at Seton Hall: Alabama, California, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Interested students should also contact their state licensing board to determine if the program meets state requirements for NP licensure.
Study Plan: The NP programs begin in the fall only. Nursing program coursework is delivered 100% online and supervised clinicals are completed locally. AGNP and PNP students are required to come to campus at least twice and may complete their orientation on campus or virtually in the online classroom. There is no on-campus requirement for the PMHNP programs. The NP programs can be completed in three to four years depending on how many courses are taken each term. The certificate programs may take less time.
MSN Core Curriculum: The MSN degree includes the following core courses: Forces in Health Care; Theoretical Basis of Nursing; Health Promotion; Advanced Clinical Pathophysiology; Clinical Pharmacology; Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making; Advanced Professional Role Enactment; and Nursing Research.
MSN AGACNP Specialization Curriculum: The AGACNP track comprises 48 credits and includes a minimum of 675 clinical hours. Specialty courses include Health Concepts of Aging; Acute Care Theory I; Advanced Acute Care Theory; and Graduate Nursing Practicum I-IV: Acute.
MSN AGPCNP Specialization Curriculum: The AGPCNP track comprises 48 credits and includes a minimum of 600 clinical hours. Specialty courses include Health Concepts of Aging; Advanced Practice Nursing I-II: Older Years; and Graduate Nursing Practicum I-IV: Older Years.
MSN PNP-PC Specialization Curriculum: The PNP-PC track comprises 42 credits and includes a minimum of 540 clinical hours. Specialty courses include Advanced Practice Nursing I-II: Younger Years; and Graduate Nursing Practicum I-IV: Younger Years.
MSN PMHNP Specialization Curriculum: The PMHNP track comprises 49 credits and includes a minimum of 600 clinical hours. Specialty courses include Advanced Physical and Psychiatric Assessment and Decision Making Across the Lifespan; Advanced Practice PMH Nursing: Non-pharmacologic Interventions; Graduate Nursing Practicum I: Psychiatric/Mental Health; Advanced Practice PMH Nursing: Child and Adolescent; Graduate Nursing Practicum II: PMHNP Advanced Practice PMH Nursing: Child and Adolescent; Advanced Practice PMH Nursing: Adults Throughout the Lifespan; Graduate Nursing Practicum III: PMHNP Advanced Practice PMH Nursing: Adults throughout the Lifespan; and Graduate Nursing Practicum IV: PMHNP Advanced Practice PMH Nursing Practicum: Complex Problems.
RN to MSN Bridge Curriculum: The RN to MSN Bridge program is designed for nurses with a non-nursing bachelor’s degree. The program comprises up to 88 credits depending on the specialization and prior education. Students must complete or have completed the following courses and credit amounts:
- Eight credits of Natural Sciences
- Six credits of English
- Nine credits of Liberal Arts
- Nine credits of Social Sciences
- Three credits of Statistics
- Three credits of Nursing Research
- Three credits of Basic Health Assessment
In addition, RN to MSN students take two semesters of courses before entering the MSN portion of the program. Courses include six credits of Professional Nursing I and five credits of Community Health Nursing Perspective. All other courses follow those listed for the MSN program and specializations, including any MSN clinical hours and any bridge course clinical hours.
BSN to DNP Curriculum: The AGACNP and AGPCNP specializations for the BSN to DNP comprise 79 credits plus at least 1,000 clinical practicum hours and the PNP specialization comprises 73 credits plus at least 1,000 clinical hours. DNP courses include Population Health in Advanced Nursing Practice; Statistics Theory and Computer Applications I; Integrity in Nursing Leadership; Leadership in Healthcare Business; Advanced Nursing Practice in Healthcare Systems; Informatics for Evidence-Based Practice or Quality and Information Management Systems; Using Research for Evidence-Based Practice; DNP Residency I-II; Scholarly Project I-II; and DNP Continuous Scholarly Project Advisement (as needed). MSN courses follow as listed above.
Post-Master’s Certificate Core Curriculum: The Post-Master’s Certificates include the following core courses: Health Promotion; Advanced Clinical Pathophysiology; Clinical Pharmacology; Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making; and Advanced Professional Role Enactment.

Online Experience: Seton Hall University utilizes Blackboard as its online Learning Management System (LMS). Courses are asynchronous and students are required to complete assignments according to a set schedule, participate in online posts and discussion boards, and communicate with faculty and peers. Faculty receive special training in online course delivery and courses are interactive and immersive, utilizing a variety of multimedia tools. Assignments may include projects, papers, and readings. Student coordinators are available on weekdays to assist online students, and Seton Hall provides 24/7technical support.
On-Site Requirements: The AGNP and PNP programs require three immersion experiences. These include an orientation at the beginning of the program, a practicum experience two years into the program, and a final practicum experience. Note that the orientation can be completed on-site in South Orange, New Jersey, or virtually online. Immersions two and three must be completed at the South Orange, NJ campus. The PMHNP programs do not have on-site requirements.

Seton Hall University graduate students may be eligible for unsubsidized federal Stafford Loans and Graduate PLUS loans according to the FAFSA. Nursing students may be eligible for a tuition reimbursement program through their employer and should inquire as such. Additionally, students may seek outside opportunities for funding such as community or religious funding.
