Headquartered in Garden City, New York, Adelphi University offers nursing professionals an online master of science in nursing (MSN) degree program with a specialization as an adult gerontology primary care nurse practitioner (AGPCNP).

The Adelphi University MSN program features small class sizes, individualized faculty mentoring, and abundant support to make the degree program accessible and rewarding. Students are paired with an advisor who works as an advocate during their studies and can assist alumni as they seek employment. Students also have access to support from admissions counselors, tuition planners, 24/7 technical support. Students may pursue full- or part-time study.

This program is specifically designed for registered nurses with active RN licenses in New York. Graduates are prepared for advanced practice as AGPCNPs and are eligible to sit for exams offered by both the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Upon graduation, students will have completed a curriculum intended to achieve several learning outcomes. Such learning outcomes include:

  • Integrating nursing theory and knowledge into everyday practice to provide evidence-based care that is safe, ethical efficient, cost-effective and culturally competent
  • Applying knowledge of healthcare policy and finance to fulfill organizational goals
  • Collaborating with healthcare professionals, other individuals and partner organizations to provide quality care

MSN program graduates are well-prepared to work in various practice settings. Popular employment settings for AGPCNPs include inpatient and outpatient hospital clinics and private practice.

Adelphi University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and the MSN-AGPCNP program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

State Restrictions: Since the program is specifically designed for registered nurses with active RN licenses in New York, NPSchools.com has classified it as an online program available to NY residents only. However, Adelphi University does accept RNs from other states, so long as they obtain a New York RN license.

Adelphi also accepts international applicants to this program. Admission requirements are similar but different from those for American citizens. As is true for domestic applicants, international applicants must have a BSN from an accredited academic program with a GPA of at least 3.0 and an active RN license in New York. Applicants must submit transcripts from all educational institutions they have attended, a personal essay and a resume. Applicants must also demonstrate English language proficiency by providing TOEFL, IELT, or DET test scores.

Study Plan: Students can complete their MSN program in as little as three years. As previously noted, students may opt for full- or part-time study. They receive the support of an advisor throughout the duration of their studies.

MSN Curriculum: Adelphi University’s online MSN program is a 45-credit-hour program. The program features personalized learning, a supportive facility, clinical practice courses, 24/7 IT support, and many other supports designed to foster students’ learning and enthusiasm for the nursing profession. Examples of courses include diagnosis and management of the adult across the lifespan, physical assessment of the adult, and health promotion and disease prevention. Students can obtain a comprehensive curriculum overview by contacting an admissions counselor.

Online Experience: The Adelphi University MSN AGPCNP program is offered online. Students have access to many resources to maximize their learning experience. They may use Adelphi’s learning and writing centers to enhance vital skills such as note-taking, test preparation, and time management. Students also receive comprehensive support through the Adelphi Center for Career and Professional Development. Career educators provide job search assistance using a variety of resources.

On-Site Requirements: Adelphi University offers the option to complete the MSN-AGPCNP program either fully online or as a part-time, blended program in which students complete both online and on-campus courses. Though the fully online program permits students a lot of flexibility and minimizes the need for in-person interaction, students can still network and seek out resources in person if they so choose. Applicants are advised to contact the school as it is possible that only some possible program offerings will be available in any given semester.
