Davenport University Online MSN-NP Programs

Davenport University, a private, not-for-profit university in Michigan, offers an online master of science in nursing (MSN) degree. Davenport University designs its degree programs through consultation with top employers so that graduates develop the skills and hands-on experience necessary to succeed in the healthcare industry. Students may complete their degrees in small class sizes on campuses throughout Michigan or online. Students choose one of two MSN specializations: family nurse practitioner (FNP) or psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP).

Davenport University’s MSN curriculum provides students with a thorough, well-rounded education through the University’s Global Campus learning platform. The curriculum is designed with continued quality assurance in mind, and its content aligns with the Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing, developed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

Students cultivate problem-solving and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in advanced nursing roles. Students learn such skills from a faculty consisting of highly qualified clinicians and nurse educators. In addition, extensive connections between faculty and healthcare partners ensure students will complete valuable clinical placements.

Throughout their studies, MSN students at Davenport University complete comprehensive coursework and clinical training designed to prepare them for advanced practice roles ultimately. Key learning outcomes include:

  • Applying knowledge and experience from nursing and related disciplines to provide exceptional, advanced nursing care
  • Designing, coordinating, and evaluating the delivery of care
  • Enhancing health outcomes through the integration of current and emerging health and information technologies
  • Collaborating to improve the delivery of care across the healthcare continuum
  • Promoting high-quality and safe patient care environments.
  • Advocating for local, state, and national policies to improve health and advance the nursing profession.

Davenport University’s MSN programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

What to Expect from Davenport University Online MSN Programs

Admission Requirements: To be eligible for Davenport University’s MSN program, applicants must possess a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. A current, valid, unrestricted RN license in a US jurisdiction or province of Canada is also necessary. The application package should include an online application, a current resume or CV, one professional recommendation, official transcripts from all previous nursing programs, and a professional essay. No GRE or GMAT scores are required as part of the application.

State Restrictions: Individuals applying for academic programs leading to licensure are recommended to contact the licensing agency in their state of residence if they intend to obtain licensure. Davenport University features a state-by-state guide of licensing agencies throughout the United States. It is the student’s responsibility to understand degree and licensure requirements.

Study Plan: Davenport University’s online MSN programs are designed for working nursing professionals and others with significant existing commitments. Students can generally complete the degree program within two to three years. Though coursework is fully online and thus allows for remote study, students can complete clinical requirements in their local area.

MSN Curriculum: The PMHNP and FNP specializations both require the completion of 18 credits of courses fundamental to the practice of nursing. This requirement consists of nine credits of courses in foundations of advanced nursing and nine credits of advanced nursing core courses. Foundational course content includes the theoretical foundation for advanced nursing practice, nursing research and evidence-based practice, and leadership theory. Advanced nursing courses cover topics including pathophysiology, pharmacology, and health assessment. Students of both concentrations also must complete a one-credit capstone project.

PMHNP Specialization Courses: Students complete 28 credits focused on the competencies necessary for this specialization. Course topics include, but are not limited to, mental health diagnosis, neuropsychopharmacology, psychotherapeutic modalities, pediatric mental health, geropsychiatry and a number of clinical practicum courses.

FNP Specialization Courses: Students complete 26 credits, which are explicitly designed to train students in the FNP specialization. Courses include health promotion for the advanced practice nurse, acute and episodic problems across the lifespan, management of patients and families with chronic conditions, and advanced practice nursing care of women, childbearing family and pediatrics. Each of these classes is paired with a clinical training requirement. Students also complete an advanced gerontology course.

Online Experience: Davenport University offers its MSN program through its online Global Campus. The Global Campus was Michigan’s first online learning community. Growing demand for greater flexibility in learning led Davenport University to create Online+—a digital suite of learning formats designed to meet the needs of a diverse student body. Some of these learning formats include on-demand, livestream, blended, and flex. Prospective students should confirm what learning options are available for the MSN program as learning delivery innovation is ever-present. Available learning formats may vary by program, matriculation date, and other factors.

On-Site Requirements: Though Davenport University MSN degree programs are offered primarily online, students still must complete clinical practicum requirements onsite. However, the programs are designed to allow students to complete their clinicals in the area close to their residence.
