Edgewood College Online MSN-NP and Post-Master’s Certificate Programs

The Edgewood College Henry Predolin School of Nursing, Business, Education, and Health Sciences, located in Madison, Wisconsin, offers an online master of science in nursing (MSN) degree program with three nurse practitioner specializations and one clinical nurse specialist (CNS) track as well as four post-master’s certificate programs. The MSN degree program specializations are adult gerontology primary care nurse practitioner (AG-PCNP), psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP), family nurse practitioner (FNP), and the CNS track. This page provides information on the CNS, AG-PCNP, and FNP post-master’s certificate programs.

All MSN programs are designed to expand nurses’ abilities to provide care to diverse patient populations across the human lifespan. The MSN-FNP program enhances skills in the care of family systems. MSN-AGPCNP students further refine their skills in caring for older adults. The MSN-PMHNP program helps nurses grow their scope of practice as they provide psychiatric, mental and emotional health care. Finally, the MSN-CNS program features a curriculum designed around three spheres of impact. These spheres are patient, nurse, and system. Students complete coursework in healthcare systems, leadership strategies, pedagogy and more as preparation to become clinical educators and leaders. MSN graduates go on to work in many settings such as private and multiple doctor practices, schools and universities, clinics, hospitals, long-term care settings and more.

Students of degree and certificate programs complete coursework and clinical training practica designed to enhance their clinical judgment and critical thinking skills.

Edgewood College’s MSN degree and certificate programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

What to Expect from the Edgewood College Online NP Degree and Certificate Programs

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the four MSN programs all have the same application requirements. They are as follows:

  • Proof of a baccalaureate or more advanced degree from a nursing program accredited by a national nursing accreditation body with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • A graduate application
  • Current CV/resume
  • Official transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate academic credits received from any postsecondary institutions
  • Two letters of recommendation from nursing supervisors and/or colleagues who can provide informed insight into the candidate’s probability of success in graduate school
  • A written statement, no more than 500 words, elaborates upon the student’s ambition to complete the Edgewood College MSN program and the educational and professional experiences that have contributed to the student’s past growth and motivation

Prior to beginning the MSN program’s practicum requirements, students will be required to complete a health form, criminal background check, and proof of a current RN license from the state/country in which they plan to complete their practicum.

Applicants who previously earned a BSN from Edgewood College within the past three years, maintained at least a 3.0 GPA, and have current RN licensure are guaranteed admission into the MSN program upon application. Applicants who have not met the minimum 3.0 GPA requirement must apply and meet all admission requirements to be considered for admission.

Certificate program admission requirements are identical to MSN program requirements except for evidence of past education. Applicants to post-graduate certificate programs must also provide proof of their MSN or doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree from a nursing program accredited by a national nursing accreditation body.

State Restrictions: Edgewood College admits students from a variety of backgrounds, including transfer, international, and veteran students. Transfer students are advised to consult the online course equivalency guide as part of their application process. International students are not currently eligible to apply to the MSN degree and post-graduate nursing certificate programs. Veterans may be eligible to receive state and/or federal aid to further their education at Edgewood College. Veterans should contact the Office of Military & Veterans Services for more information.

Study Plan: The duration of study for degree and certificate programs varies according to the curriculum, pace of study, and other factors. Students can generally complete the MSN programs in two to three years. Certificate programs are a shorter time commitment, as core coursework required of degree-seeking students prior to their specialized coursework is not typically required by certificate programs.

MSN Curriculum: All MSN degree program students must complete six core courses totaling 18 credits. These courses include clinical prevention assessment and planning, healthcare systems and policy, advanced leadership roles in the healthcare system, applied statistics, and evidence-based practice. A sixth course, NRS 612, is not required of PMHNP students. All degree and certificate programs require the completion of specialized coursework targeted to the skills and experience necessary for different nursing specializations.

MSN-AGPCNP Specialization Courses: Please contact Edgewood College directly to confirm coursework requirements.

MSN-FNP Specialization Courses: FNP students must complete 21 credits of courses focused on topics such as differential diagnosis, equity and management of diverse patient populations, pathophysiology, physical assessment, pharmacology, a three-course sequence of advanced clinical training, and more.

MSN-PMHNP Specialization Courses: PMHNP students complete 36 credit hours of specialization courses. Courses focus on topics including neuropathophysiology, a sequence of three courses on the psychopharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management and evidence-based treatment of major psychopathological disorders, pathophysiology, physical assessment, three clinical practicum courses, and more.

MSN-CNS Specialization Courses: The CNS program must complete 24 credit hours of courses focused on topics such as differential diagnosis, pathophysiology, physical assessment, pharmacology, health systems informatics, and a three-course sequence of advanced clinical training.

The CNS-AG, AGPCNP, and FNP post-graduate certificate programs all have curricula essentially identical to the MSN degree programs focused in these same areas. The main difference is that these certificate programs require master’s level nursing education for admission and thus do not require students to complete the core coursework expected of MSN degree students. This makes the certificate programs a shorter, less intensive commitment. Requirements for these certificate programs range between 12 and 27 credits.

Online Experience: Edgewood College uses an online learning delivery model for most of its curriculum. Given the diverse student body, this model effectively accommodates student needs.

On-Site Requirements: Students must complete their practicum/clinical experiences in person. Students seeking more information about their clinical practicum requirement should contact Edgewood College directly.
