Manhattanville University Online FNP Programs
What to Expect from Manhattanville University Online MSN and Certificate Family NP Programs
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the MSN-FNP program and the advanced FNP certificate program must hold a BSN from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Certificate program students must also have completed a master’s degree in nursing and have maintained the same minimum GPA in their graduate studies. Applicants to both programs must submit the online application, one letter of recommendation, a personal statement, official transcripts indicating completion of an undergraduate or graduate statistics course with a grade of B or higher, and proof of a New York State RN license. Though no prior RN experience is necessary to enter either program, students must demonstrate experience in direct patient care before beginning the required practicum.
Please take note that the advanced certificate program is currently only to be offered in the summer of 2025.
State Restrictions: Manhattanville University requires that all nursing clinical practicums be completed in NYC-area hospitals. The MSN-FNP program leads to New York State licensure. Students can seek national FNP certification and licensure in other states upon graduation. Students completing the advanced FNP certificate can sit for the certification exams offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
Study Plan: The MSN-FNP program can be completed in 24 months or more, with most students completing it in seven semesters of part-time study, including summers. Students come to the Purchase, New York, campus for one, three-day immersion during the Advanced Health Assessment course. Start dates land in the fall, spring, and summer, and courses last seven weeks each. Three clinical practicums and preparation for the national FNP certification exam through the Fitzgerald FNP Certification Review Course are also included. The program culminates with a comprehensive exam.
The certificate program is a smaller time commitment. It can be completed in as little as three academic terms. Coursework consists of advanced practice nursing theory, seminar and practicum classes. Students begin completing practicum requirements in their first term. Students take a comprehensive exam at the end of their third seminar course.
MSN – FNP Curriculum: The online MSN-FNP program comprises 42 credits plus 540 clinical hours. Core courses include the theoretical basis for advanced nursing practice roles; leadership, quality management, safety, and health policy; research for advanced nursing practice; and ethical principles in healthcare. APRN courses include advanced pharmacology; advanced pathophysiology; advanced physical examination and diagnostics fundamentals; and advanced physical examination and diagnostics lab.
FNP specialization courses include advanced family nursing practice I-III; advanced family nursing practicum I-III; advanced family nursing practice seminar I-II; and advanced family practice nursing seminar III with a comprehensive examination.
Advanced FNP Certificate Curriculum: The certificate curriculum requires completion of 18 credits. The curriculum consists solely of the FNP specialization courses noted immediately above, namely advanced family nursing practice I-III; advanced family nursing practicum I-III; advanced family nursing practice seminar I-II; and advanced family practice nursing seminar III with a comprehensive examination to be completed at the end of this third seminar course.
Online Experience: Manhattanville University delivers online courses through Blackboard, including synchronous and asynchronous components. Courses may include recorded lectures, videos, discussion boards, assignments, assessments, online chats, and online group sessions. Students have access to many of the same services as on-campus students, including academic advising, financial aid counseling, career counseling, library and bookstore services, and technical support.
On-Site Requirements: MSN-FNP students come to the Purchase, NY, campus for one three-day campus immersion. The coursework is online, and clinicals are completed in NYC-area hospitals. Prospective applicants of the advanced FNP certificate program should contact Manhattanville University directly with questions regarding any on-site requirements.
