The St. John Fisher University (SJFU) Wegmans School of Nursing offers an online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) plus Post-Master’s Certificate programs with five advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) specializations that are distance accessible:

  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP)
  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP)
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
  • Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist (AGCNS)

In addition, the university offers accelerated RN to MSN programs where enrolled nursing students are eligible to take up to two graduate nursing courses in place of undergraduate courses.

These programs are offered in partnership with 2U, Inc., a worldwide leader in distance learning technology. Students complete all coursework online, and also complete a clinical preceptorship at an approved facility based in New York.

Applicants must have at least one year of recent clinical work experience, and AGACNP applicants must have a current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. In addition, PMHNP applicants should have psychiatric-mental health clinical experience.

Program graduates will be eligible to sit for appropriate certification exams in their area or areas of specialization.

St. John Fisher University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). SJFU is located in Rochester, NY.

What to Expect from St. John Fisher University Online Nursing Programs

Admission Requirements: All nursing applicants must hold an unencumbered RN license in the state of New York. The GRE and GMAT are not required for admission. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required and preference is given to applicants with a 3.3 or higher cumulative GPA. In addition, nurses must have a minimum of one year of clinical work experience when they apply. AGACNP applicants must have current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification plus at least one year of clinical experience in an acute care setting. PMHNP applicants should also have psychiatric-mental health clinical experience.

MSN applicants must have a BSN degree if following the BSN to MSN pathway. Current undergraduates in the BSN program may apply for an accelerated BS to MS option by taking specific graduate-level courses during the senior year of their BSN program.

Post-master’s certificate students must hold an MSN degree from an accredited program. Prerequisites for the nursing programs include health assessment, statistics, and research with a grade of “B” or higher. Application materials include official transcripts, a current resume, a personal goals statement, and two electronic recommendation forms. Non-native English speakers must submit proof of English language proficiency.

State Restrictions: The SJFC online nursing programs are currently offered to qualified registered nurses across the United States, however there are several state restrictions. View program-specific state restrictions in the data tables down below.

Study Plan: Students are admitted to the SJFC nursing programs in the Fall and the Spring for most specializations, with the exception of the PMHNP program which begins in the Fall only. The programs are offered both part-time and full-time and completion time varies depending on the sequence chosen. Courses run either seven weeks or 14 weeks.

MSN Curriculum: Core courses for the MSN programs include Foundations in Nursing Research; Foundations of Evidence-Based Practice and Applications in Advanced Practice Nursing; Advanced Technology in Support of Clinical Management; Healthcare Policy, Healthcare Delivery Systems, and Health Law; Biostatistics and Epidemiology; Advanced Pathophysiology; Pharmacology; Diagnostic Reasoning; and Complex Systems and Leadership. In addition, nursing students take Capstone Development plus one of the following: Capstone Implementation (AGCNS students) or NP Comprehensive Exam (NP students).

  • FNP Specialty Courses: The FNP specialty comprises completion of 47 credits plus 600 clinical hours. Courses include Advanced Concepts in the Care of Older Adults; Advanced Concepts in the Care of Adults; Advanced Concepts in the Care of Women; Advanced Concepts in the Care of Children; and the following FNP seminars: Diagnosis and Management for Adults; Diagnosis and Management for Older Adults; Diagnosis and Management for Women; and Diagnosis and Management for Pediatric Patients.
  • AGPCNP Specialty Courses: The AGACNP specialty comprises 47 credits plus 600 clinical hours. Courses include Advanced Concepts in the Care of Older Adults; Advanced Concepts in the Care of Adults; AGPCNP Primary Care Diagnosis and Management Seminar I-IV; Complex Care of Chronically Ill Adults; and Issues in Acute Care.
  • AGACNP Specialty Courses: The AGACNP specialty comprises 47 credits plus 600 clinical hours. Courses include Advanced Concepts in the Care of Older Adults; Advanced Concepts in the Care of Adults; AGACNP Acute Care Diagnosis and Management Seminar I-IV; Complex Care of Chronically Ill Adults; and Issues in Acute Care.
  • PMHNP Specialty Courses: The PMHNP specialty comprises completion of 54 credits plus 600 clinical hours. Courses include Foundations of Advanced Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Practice; Advanced Neuropsychiatric Assessment and Intervention; Advanced Psychopharmacology; Advanced Concepts and Psychotherapy with Individuals, Groups, and Families; Advanced Concepts in Health Integration; Psychopathology and Differential Diagnosis; Advanced Concepts in Child and Adolescent Mental Health; and the following clinical practicums: Trauma-Informed Assessment and Intervention; Evidence-based Treatment Modalities; Interactive Management of Complex Comorbidities; and Advanced Strategies for At-Risk Populations.
  • AGCNS Specialty Courses: The AGCNS specialty comprises 44 credits plus 500 clinical hours. Courses include Advanced Concepts in the Care of Older Adults; Advanced Concepts in the Care of Adults; Adult Applications of the Spheres of Influence CNS Seminar; Older Adult Applications of the Spheres of Influence CNS Seminar; Synthesis CNS Practicum; Synthesis of the Spheres of Influence CNS Seminar; and Issues in Acute Care.

Post-Master’s Certificate Curriculum: Nurses with a master’s degree in nursing or a non-clinical master’s degree may apply for any of the five nursing specializations in the form of a post-master’s certificate. A gap analysis will be performed to determine any courses that may be waived, and courses follow the specialty courses for each specialization. The same number of clinical hours would apply to the certificate programs.

Online Experience: St. John Fisher University utilizes Blackboard as its online learning management system (LMS) in addition to course design through a partnership with 2U, Inc.

Most course material is presented asynchronously, however, there may be some synchronous elements included such as web conferencing, group meetings, presentations, and guest speakers. Assignments may include projects, presentations, readings, viewing recorded lectures and material, discussion boards and participation, group projects, and assessments. Expected personal time is 10 hours per week for semester courses and 20 hours per week for shorter courses.

There is an online student orientation in Blackboard that must be completed prior to beginning courses. Student services include admissions counseling, academic advising, faculty support, technical support, bookstore and library services, tutoring, and career counseling.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements as the nursing programs are 100 percent online with clinical preceptorships completed in New York state. Students are welcome to participate in graduation ceremonies on campus.

SJFC online graduate nursing students may be eligible for unsubsidized federal student loans through the FAFSA. Other options for funding may include employer tuition reimbursement programs and community and organizational scholarships and grants.
