University of West Florida Online Family Nurse Practitioner Program
What to Expect from the University of West Florida Online FNP Program
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the FNP program must have a current, unrestricted RN license in the state in which they will complete their clinical practicums, as well as a BSN from an ACEN, NLNAC, or CCNE-accredited program with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Completion of undergraduate statistics with a grade of C or better is required. Online applications require an application and application fee, official transcripts, a curriculum vitae, a career goals statement, and a copy of the RN license. Applicants must gain approval from the School of Nursing Graduate Admissions Committee. No GRE or GMAT is required and work experience is expected with RN licensure.
State Restrictions: The University of West Florida does not guarantee eligibility for licensure in states outside of Florida. UWF is an NC-SARA participant and is authorized to provide distance education in approved states. However, it is the responsibility of the student to determine eligibility for state licensure in their state of residence.
Study Plan: The University of West Florida online FNP program can be completed in six semesters and is designed for working nurses. There are Fall, Spring, and Summer start dates. There is a summer immersion including orientation and a virtual skills workshop delivered the summer before clinical practicum courses begin. This may require travel to the Pensacola campus. The fee for this workshop is split 50/50 between the university and students. Clinical preceptorships are completed local to the student, with eligibility being the responsibility of the student outside of Florida.
MSN – FNP Curriculum: The online MSN – FNP program comprises 45 credits and 600 clinical hours. Core courses include Advanced Health Assessment; Advanced Pharmacology; Advanced Pathophysiology; Foundations of Nursing Science; Integration of Evidence in Advanced Nursing Practice; Health Systems Leadership and Policy Strategies; Population Health Promotion and Management; and Project Evaluation and Dissemination.
FNP specialty courses may include: Care of the Adult I-II and Practicums; Care of the Child and Family and Practicum; Women’s Health; and Care of Women Practicum. A summer immersion is included in the program before clinicals begin. This includes an orientation and virtual skills workshop. Students may need to travel to the Pensacola campus for this immersion.
Online Experience: The University of West Florida utilizes eLearning through Canvas to deliver courses. Assessments are completed using the Respondus LockDown Browser. Through TurningTechnologies, UWF students are able to participate in PowerPoint presentations using a response card called a clicker through their TurningPoint technology. UWF offers library services, tutoring, writing lab services, and technical support to online students.
On-Site Requirements: FNP students may be required to attend a virtual immersion the summer before clinical practicums begin. This immersion is delivered virtually. Students should inquire with the School of nursing for further details. In addition, online FNP students complete a 600 hour clinical preceptorship at an approved site local to them. Again, out-of-state students must verify licensure requirements and eligibility for their state of residence.
